Spring Concert April 2015

Margaret Crompton conducting Gotherington Singers at her farewell concert
Saturday, 18 April 2015

Our concert on Saturday night was very special ! It was one of our best concerts ever and a really moving occasion. The audience was full of friends old and new as we wished Margaret well in her retirement after nearly 50 years as Musical Director of the Gotherington Singers.

We were delighted to welcome back an old friend, Carol Axford, as our guest soloist, accompanied on the piano by her son Lee. Carol plays the harmonica and has performed with the choir several times over the years. She also came with us on our tour to Belgium. We were treated to a wonderful and varied selection of music, from classical to jazz via Bavarian oom-pah music and an evocative rendering of the signature tune to “Last of the Summer Wine”. The audience were enthralled by the wonderful performances of both Carol and Lee – their playing was absolutely breath-taking

At the end of the concert Chris Lammiman, another choir friend, gave a tribute to Margaret, talking about her life with the choir and how much we owe to her expertise and commitment. He reminded us of all the choir’s achievements under her leadership, including winning the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts. Margaret started the choir and through 48 years of wonderful music, friendship, laughter and hard work has brought us to where we are now. It was a moving tribute which echoed the feelings of all present and past choir members, and many of us shed tears as we sang "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" as our own special tribute to Margaret.

There are no words to describe how much we owe her and how much we will all miss her, but one thing is certain - we will carry on where she has left off, taking her inspiration with us.
